Sorting & Inventory

What is the best way to organize a large LEGO® collection?

The short answer

Sort by type first, not by color. Take apart what you do not want to keep built, then split the pieces into a few big groups: bricks, plates, tiles, slopes, Technic and special pieces, with minifigures and printed pieces kept apart. Then scan tray by tray with BrickVision™, so every piece lands in one digital inventory you can search, count and compare with official sets.

A simple sorting plan

  1. Separate built models you want to keep from loose bricks.
  2. Pull out minifigures, printed pieces and unusual parts first. They are your best clues for finding sets.
  3. Sort the rest by type: bricks, plates, tiles, slopes, round pieces, Technic, wheels and special pieces.
  4. Split very big groups by size later, for example 1 × 1 and 1 × 2 apart from 2 × 4.
  5. Use shallow trays or boxes you can pour out and photograph.

Turn it into a digital inventory

Pour one tray at a time onto a flat surface, spread the pieces out and scan them with BrickVision™. Save each scan as a new collection or add it to one you already have. Every part is pictured in its real color, and you can review and correct counts at any time.

Once your pieces are in, Brick Finder can show which of 21,800+ official LEGO® sets you can build and what is missing.

Why not sort by color first?

Color sorting looks tidy but makes it slow to find a particular shape. Sorting by type keeps similar shapes together. For scanning, mixed colors are fine: different colors touching each other actually help the scanner tell pieces apart.
